When I went to my 16 week appt. with my ob Dr. she looked at my blood-work from last time..(I had already looked at it online, but because I hadn't heard from her, I figured all was ok).
She said that my Down's Syndrome blood work should have been flagged as it was considered "high risk". It was a ratio of 1:213 and the lab cutoff normal was 1:250.
I really wasn't too concerned, but I did worry a little. Wayne and I decided from the beginning that we did want to know..Obviously, nothing would change, but we wanted to be prepared, because of potential health problems, etc.
She sent me to a high-risk Dr. so they could do a higher level ultrasound, and hopefully give us some peace of mind.
Friday was the day, and to say I was calm, would be a lie. I just kept praying and praying for God to make me calm, and whatever the outcome would be, that we would be at peace.
The Dr. spent 20 minutes looking at the baby's organs in close-up detail. She explained to us everything she was seeing. It was great! We got to see the kidneys, stomach, brain, femurs, tibia's, etc...It was very surreal! The baby wouldn't cooperate very well for her to see the heart. She saw part of it, and what she saw looked good. We also found out that our baby is indeed a BOY! On the scan, it was clear as day!!!!
At the end the Dr. said the "Your baby looks perfect!" It was definitely a relief, and we decided we were at peace with that, and would not do the Materni 21 that would tell us for sure. Had a red flag came up on the scan, we probably would have.
I go back in March to her, so she can maybe see the heart better. She suspects all is fine, but she is just being thorough, which we think is great.
Wyatt Allen Fry is already so loved and we can't wait to meet him in July! We are so thankful he is growing like he should (he is 7 ounces!) and we pray that he will continue to be healthy!
So the "bump" turned out to be fine....
